Jasper Woods

Sunday, November 21st, 2004

November can be a difficult time to find photographic inspiration in Michigan. Typically we refer to it as the ’season of brown.’ Fall color has past and the snow has yet to fall.

However, this morning yielded many images that I am excited about. Jasper Woods is a Michigan Nature Association sanctuary near Port Huron, filled with hemlock, birch, and a very rich forest floor. Aside from the hemlock, Jasper seemed to fit the image of November, pretty much brown leaves and a brown & green setting.

Looking closer however revealed many interesting textures, some traces of fall colors left behind, and colors of moss and growth now on the bare trees. These things are there most of the time at Jasper. But with the dullness of many other things this time of year, these details seemed to flurish.

Aurora Predictions – Custom longitude maps for your location

Recent sunspot activity has excited a lot of people because the Aurora Borealis is being seen in states as far south as NC and Alabama. This link is to a site that gives you a bit of a prediction on if you should be able to see it in your area.

Last night was supposed to be good for SE Michigan. Despite being ready to go out and photograph at 11:30 pm, cloud cover suddenly rolled in spoiling the opportuntity. The entire evening was perfectly clear! Supposedly the night before was very nice :(

LensWork Audio Blog Commentaries by Brooks Jensen

If you are passionate about photography, and haven’t discovered the world of “Lenswork.” – you have been missing out on one of the most educational and thought provoking pieces of literature about this artform. Lenswork conjures an image in my mind of a grand landscape and hordes of people taking pictures from a certain favored spot. Off in the distance is a monk, sitting by himself, looking over the landscape, the people, and making observations to himself. That monk to me is what Lenswork is like in the world of equipment focused media and technojargon websites. It embraces an aspect of photography that I find truer to my own musings about this artform, and presents it in a well written, thought provoking manner.

I have posted the link to Brooks Jensen’s audio blog. Take a listen, I think you will find the commentary worth many future visits.
