Friday, January 28th, 2005Bangladesh What Worked What Didn’t
I just finished reading Michael’s report from his trip to Bangladesh and found it very interesting. Since I have yet to make a trip of this magnitude while shooting digital, it is very helpful to hear some of the things that worked and things that didn’t.
Digital cameras certainly change a lot of things from the travel standpoint. I can second all of his recommendations for the Epson P2000 image storage device. (Five thumbs up?) I certainly have not put mine through the rigors that Michael did on this trip, but it is good to know it will be up to task when I do. Good job Epson!
Rhetoric and hyperbole in photo equipment
Thursday, January 27th, 2005OK, just a small rant on my part. I read a lot of reviews, forums, and receive a few newsletters from a variety of sources on photography and equipment. Sometimes the rhetoric and hyperbole are so thick you would think they are running for office somewhere. To top it off, it creates this group of ‘followers’ that treat some of these ‘know-it-alls’ like gods. They shall declare that such and such a piece of equipment is not worthy, perhaps even vehemently. Their way is the only way. Or perhaps they are just trying to justify their own decisions by putting down others.
Don’t let someone, pro or not, famous or not, direct your entire thought pattern on what is right and what is worthy of your hard earned money. Check with a variety of sources. Question why. Make your own decision on what suits your needs best, not what you are told will fit you best.
Plenty of photographers make equipment that ’sucks,’ is worthless,’ or declared ‘useless’ work for them day in and day out with thousands of beautiful images to show for it.
Site tweaks
Sunday, January 23rd, 2005Dusting off more images
Saturday, January 22nd, 2005I just made another submission recently to a card company, and came across a few old images that I liked that haven’t been scanned. I will probably be digging around a bit more – so the subject matter will be varied.
Scanning slides can be such a tedious task. Although digital captures consume some post-processing time, slides take that processing time + scanning time + dust cleanup. Reviewing slides on a light table is much quicker of course, but the path to the website is longer.
Every time I pull a submission together, I am thankful that I have my slides cataloged and organized in a way I can find them.
