I came across this link recently that I thought I would share. It is an article and following interesting discussion about archival optical media – ie. DVD/CD’s and how it is worth paying close attention to the type you buy, the manufacturer, and even the format. With all the DVD formats out there, I didn’t know that DVD+R is an inherently more stable format than the others.
I don’t use optical media for backup anymore, but do still have quite a few slide scans stored on gold MAM-A CD’s that I need to migrate over to my network drives. They just aren’t practical when trying to backup large file – you end up with hundreds of disks. Just think about the chore to have to restore from all of those! But a lot of people still do use them if it suits their workflow. Sometimes it is a good idea to have backups in a variety of forms…uber-redundancy can’t be that bad.

Hi Mark:
For Christmas I received an external storage drive called “My Book.” I was able to put an enormous mp3 music collection on it, back up both computers with tons of room to spare. It’s plug and play, and really looks like a hardcover book – looks good/neat/orderly on the desktop or bookshelf. I imagine it would be a good thing for digital photo libraries.

Have a great night, and stay warm up there!
