Whew! Wordpress upgrade OK
by Mark ~ October 4th, 2008. Filed under: Latest News.I have been receiving some nag emails from my host that I was long overdue to upgrade my installation of Wordpress. . Apparently there were some older Wordpress files that were triggering some alarms that needed security patches. . They weren’t really forcing me to upgrade, but I kept getting these friendly reminders every 2 weeks or so for the past 2 months.
Upgrading always makes me nervous as hell. I tweak the theme considerably and wonder if everything is going to come crashing down. . Of course I make backups just in case.
But one little item I found is a Wordpress Automatic Upgrade Plugin that takes you through step by step – even creates backups for you. . It worked surprisingly well in getting me from Wordpress 2.3 to 2.6.2. . It didn’t reactivate all of my previous plugins, I have to figure out why that is. But it did 95% of the work. . All I did was click OK to go ahead to each next step of the process. . Highly recommended!

Mark, does your web host provide fantastico for managing installs? I’m wondering how it compares to the plugin.

Wren, I think they do have fantastico, but it is usually a few versions behind the actual latest release. I have never used it.

Hey Mark,
I’m SO far behind in the upgrade – I did it once before and it was SUCH a pain. I will look into the plugin you mentioned, as the process definitely is beyond me – and I’m getting those emails too.:)
Thanks for the info.

Hey Mark,
I just went thru the upgrading process, and wanted to say thanks again – that’s a handy tool. Saved WAY more of my time than I deserve.
Thank you.
