Radiant Vista
by Mark ~ October 25th, 2008. Filed under: Photoshop Tips, Visit-worthy links, inspiration, nature photography.I was saddened to learn earlier this week that Radiant Vista, a website I have been fond of for a very long time (see my post from April 2006), one I have referred to in my own posts in the past, is no more. . The site is officially “closed” as of Oct 24. . Instead the great contributors there have decided to move on with their own projects. . Although I was never fortunate enough to take one of their workshops, I learned quite a lot about Photoshop thanks to Mark Johnson’s excellent teaching methods and demeanor in his Photoshop Workbenches. . Craig Tanner’s podcasts and Daily Critiques were equally as insightful on many aspects of photography, and in so many ways,. you simply didn’t find anywhere else.
I was always amazed at the pace they kept new material flowing. As someone who sometimes stuggles just to keep up with blog posts, I can only imagine the amount of commitment involved in creating 5-10 minute in-depth daily critiques of photographs, or 15 minute and often longer Photoshop tutorials. . It is obvious they are energized by the passion for what they love.
On a good note however,. what was once passion they put into RV is now passion they put into their own separate projects. . Similar to when your favorite band splits up, it can be interesting to see where the followup projects take its members. . Please check out their new sites.
Craig Tanner, Marti Jeffers – The Mindful Eye (along with some other great new contributors)
Mark Johnson – Photoshop Workbenches
And thanks Radiant Vista, it has been a great run.

Hey Mark,
I never really spent much time on RV, but I do enjoy some of Craig’s podcasts. He gave a lecture when I was just beginning to get into photography, and he’s been an inspiration for a long time. I went to a Rocky Mountain School of Photography weekend seminar one time, simply because he was teaching there – he’s a really great teacher, and a helluva nice fella. I’ll check out the newer sites, thanks.
Cheers
Carl

Hi Mark, I did see this when I received a mail from Mark Johnson. Quite sad indeed as I think they had a great site running with many people enjoying it. I was surprised to not see any sort of explanation of what seems to have been a relatively sudden decision (might not have been), but I too guess the workload has been immense considering these nice people would also want some time for personal projects and something which might generate more income to meet the bills of this increasingly expensive world…(aussie dollar has dropped about 35% in the past 14 days against the US dollar!).

Thanks Mark for the new links. I’ll check them out, they look like great sites.

Although it was admirable for all the free content they were offering, I have to imagine if you are making a living at it, you eventually have to set some priorities on what pays the bills.
Thomas, sounds like a great time to take a trip to the Great Barrier Reef to me.
Boyd, thanks for stopping by.

I was a bit puzzeled when I stopped recieving RV podcasts in itunes, then dismayed to find the site has been wound up.
I watched the Photoshop Workbench and Daily Critique avidly, but I’m glad they’re continuing the great work on seperate sites.
Great work fellas, can’t wait for the new stuff.

Rob, yeah – the podcasts became far and few between – certainly a result of Craig being so busy with workshops among other things probably. I don’t know if they plan on continuing the podcasts. I selfishly hope so. I always found them great to have on in the car when heading out in the morning.

Yes Mark, Great Barrier Reef, now is a good time! I seem to remember you enjoying diving, so that would be a nice destination! You visit my shop in Cairns and buy some natural fibre clothing at the same time!
P.S. Congratulations on your new President! Quite a historical moment and change. Without going too much into politics I do think this will change the rest of the worlds view on America quite a bit (too a more positive view that is).

Thomas,
Thank you for the comment – I would love to see your shop. And thank you for the congratulations. It is one of the happiest days in a long time. I feel very proud to have helped put this great man in office. It is amazing to see the reaction around the entire world. Dancing in the streets in Kenya for an American President – Mock elections taking place in China pretending to vote for Obama – Joy and admiration from Iranians regarding the decision… who would have thought?

Sad to see them close. Thanks for posting the links to the new websites. By the way, Mark’s book Botanical Dreams is wonderful! Don’t know if you have checked it out or not.
